About Amy Gostkowski

Career:

Amy Gostkowski is a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Though she spent her first three and a half years at the university studying popular culture, she made the switch to print journalism and earned her Bachelor of Science in Journalism degree. 

She started working as a copy editor for The BG News, a daily independent newspaper at BGSU in her fourth year of school. As an editor she discovered a passion to improve the works of other writers and give the students and community a quality product. In 2008 she was named copy chief for the summer run of the paper. She continued to work as a copy editor until May 2009 when she left to pursue a fellowship with The Arizona Republic. 

At The Arizona Republic Amy worked on the community copy desk in the Mesa bureau. As a Pulliam Fellow she was one of eight full-time copy editors on the desk. The community desk is the busiest desk at The Republic, editing nearly 800 slugs a week and meeting at least two deadlines daily to produce 16+ community sections.

In September 2009 Amy moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., to begin an internship with USA Hockey Magazine. She is part of an in-house two-man team including the magazine's Editor-in-Chief Harry Thompson. In addition to her duties as both a writer and editor for the magazine, she created extra content for the website in the form of videos and photo slide shows featuring audio from player interviews. She was also in charge of the magazine's Facebook page and Twitter account. She used Facebook and Twitter to keep readers updated on news with Team USA and American players around the NHL, as well as using them as open forums to get feedback from readers.

During the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Amy was in charge of running USA Hockey Magazine's day-to-day operations while Mr. Thompson reported from Vancouver, B.C. During his absence, Amy oversaw the final stages of production for the March 2010 issue including proofreading and making corrections in Quark.

In June 2010 Amy began work as a Web editor for The Blade, a newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. Initially brought on as a full-time copy editor with part-time Web duties, Amy became one of two full-time Web editors to create and manage content on ToledoBlade.com as well as the newspaper's Facebook and Twitter accounts. During day shifts Amy is in charge of uploading new content to the website and moving existing stories to keep the look of the website fresh. During the night shifts she is the has the responsibility of loading, formatting, and arranging the entire content of the next day's newspaper and it's extra sections (some nights more than 60 pages of material) to online availability after midnight. During this time she also keeps up with breaking news, nightly sports articles, and keeping the public informed via Facebook and Twitter.

Personal:

Amy is the youngest of four siblings and the daughter of John and Kathy Gostkowski of Bryan, Ohio. In her free time she enjoys reading mystery novels, watching science fiction shows like Battlestar Galactica, and playing pick-up hockey.

She is in the process of teaching herself the principles of newspaper design and Adobe InDesign as well as expanding her knowledge of social media.
